Plastic Bottles Produced From Plant Material

March 15, 2011

PepsiCo announced today that they have developed a new PET plastic bottle made completely from plant material. The bottle is the only one hundred percent plant-based, PET bottle, and the company can now produce a beverage container from natural resources. The PET Plastic Bottle is made from natural materials including grass, pine bark and corn husks, orange peels, potato peels, oat hulls and other agricultural byproducts from its foods business.

The source of the agricultural byproducts can be from the food business to manufacture an environmentally sound bottle for beverages.

Through the combination of biological and chemical processes, PepsiCo discovered a method to create a molecular structure that is identical to petroleum-based PET. The product is a bottle that has the appearance, touch and performance to contain products identically to existing PET Plastic Bottles.
