Know Your Bottle’s Body Parts!

When looking for the right bottle to package your product, it sure helps to know what the bottle is made of. And we don’t mean just the material.

In fact, there’s a lot more to it than the material that determines whether a particular bottle is the right choice… Today, we’ll go through all the bottle body parts – top to bottom!

Let's start with the Orifice. This is the central opening of a bottle. Often referred to as the mouth, it is the means through which the container is filled and accessed by the consumer.

Next is the Finish. Finishes come in different styles and sizes and each finish has an assigned number. For instance, our 16 oz BBQ Sauce Round has a 38/400 finish. The first number in the finish, in this case 38, refers to the diameter of the neck measured in millimeters. The second number, 400, is associated with the bottle’s thread size. This number determines which closures will securely fit on which bottle. Note: Bottle and closure finishes should always be an exact match in order to work properly.

The finish sits on the Neck of the Bottle. Granted, some bottles, such as Pharmaceutical Rounds or Spice Jars, don’t have a neck. But others, such as wine bottles or sauce bottles do. The neck is the narrow part of the bottle that connects the finish to the shoulder.

Below the Neck is the Shoulder. The shoulder alludes to the widening of the bottle, just after the neck and slants down into the body of the container.

The Body of the bottle is the area that most people are familiar with. Primarily used to contain and display the filled product, the body also provides a label panel for product decoration.

Toward the bottom end of the container, you may notice a slight curve, before the container goes straight into the base. That curve is the Heel. The heel accommodates the change in balance as the vertical sides of the bottle angle into the horizontal base.

The Base is the final piece in the bottle puzzle. Located at the bottom of the container, it provides a balanced foundation on which the bottle can stand.

From orifice to base, we have covered each element in the bottle formula. Now take a look at our wide selection of plastic bottles and glass bottles to see if we have what you’re looking for.

Measuring Jelly: Fluid Ounces vs. Net Weight Ounces

We all know that measurements can be a pain. And, if you’re like most people, dimensional details such as the height, diameter, weight and mass of a bottle measured in cm, in, mm, oz or gram simply confuse you.

When searching out packaging for jelly, dimensions become even more confusing. Because now you’re suddenly dealing with two measurements for one and the same bottle!

So today we’ll shed some light on the mystery with an insightful article that will make jelly packaging seem a whole lot simpler…

Let’s start out with our Hexagonal Glass Jars as an example.
As you can see, this item is listed as having a 9 oz capacity, but it holds 12 oz of jelly. There you have it: two separate measurements for one container. This doesn’t make sense to most people.

The key to understanding, is to become familiar with two of the most commonly used types of ounces: fluid and net weight. In our Hexagonal Jar example, the first measurement of 9 oz is given in fluid ounces (FL. OZ.). The second measurement of 12 oz reflects the net weight ounces
(NET WT. OZ.), the standard by which jelly is typically measured and sold.

Fluid ounces are the form of measurement that determines how many ounces of liquid a bottle or jar will hold. This unit measures the liquid volume capacity of containers, like you would expect from a beverage or shampoo container.
Net weight ounces do not consider volume estimates. Instead, this number refers to the mass or weight of the product inside the jar. Like jelly, other cooking materials like powders and spices are also measured in net weight ounces.

Unfortunately there is no secret formula to determine fluid ounce to net weight ounce. That would be far too simple. However, all you need to know is that the Hexagonal Jar doesn’t actually hold more jelly than it is described to hold, the contents are merely measured in a different way.

Speaking of Hexagonal Jars, now that you understand how their contents are measured, they do make a perfect addition to anyone’s jelly product line! And, if Hexagonal Jars aren’t your style, we also carry other glass jar options in various shapes and sizes.

Be sure to check out our Hexagonal Jar family or our Round Glass Jar options at www.ebottles.com for your jelly canning needs.

How Do I Order My Bottles and Caps Online?

At eBottles.com, making your online shopping experience as easy as possible is our most important goal. So today, we’ll highlight some online features that may help you navigate our website.

For example, did you know that you can look up dimensions, including label panel size for each bottle online? Or, did you know that the neck finish tells you more than just which cap will fit the bottle?

When looking for a particular item online, start by going to our homepage at www.ebottles.com. There, you can either search by material, shop by category, or shop by item.

Once you’ve located your item, you can look up additional details regarding your item. You will see a chart that looks like this:

Size(Click for dimensions)

In the left column, you see the Size of your bottle. Note: The size is always measured in fluid ounces. If you click on the size, a new window will open that will show you the dimensions of the bottle. Click here for an example.

Next, you see a column that shows you the Color of your bottle.

The Neck Finish column shows you 2 numbers, separated with a slash. The number in front of the slash stands for the outside diameter of the bottle opening (measured in mm). To get the inner diameter of the bottle opening, you need to substract the thickness of the glass or plastic, ranging anywhere from 3 to 6 mm. The number behind the slash represents the thread style, often determining how tall the cap is (400 is short, 410 is medium, 415 is tall, 485 is for spice caps).

The In Stock column shows you whether an item is in stock.

Next, you can see all your Closure Options. These are the items that can be partnered with the bottle you selected. To understand the code for each closure, you can simply scroll down on the page and you will see an image of each closure with the code listed next to it.

The reason why we sell our bottles and closures separately is because most bottles have a variety of caps to choose from. Plus, some of our customers prefer to purchase bottles without caps.
In the Quantity column, you will see at what quantities we offer price breaks. Please note that the Price is listed without closure. Once you add the bottle(s) to your cart, you will be asked to choose a cap on the next page.

When you are done shopping, proceed to Checkout to enter your billing, shipping and payment information. Your card will not be processed until you confirm your order, including the cost for shipping and handling. We do not charge your card until your order ships.

If you prefer, you may of course always place your order by calling us toll free at 888-215-0023. Our Customer Service representatives are standing by to answer your questions and offer their expert advice Monday through Friday from 8am – 5pm EST.

All of our bottles and jars are new and clean. They're great for anything from food to personal care products to industrial cleaners.

As always, we appreciate your valuable feedback. Please feel free to add your comments in the space provided below.
